Two options for graduate training at CabezaLab


Graduate program in Psychology and Neuroscience

  • Admission to P&N graduate program: http://pn.aas.duke.edu/graduate/index.htm
  • Start research full-time in the CabezaLab in Year 1
  • Do a part-time laboratory rotation in one other laboratory
  • Take required courses: first year seminar, four core courses (cognitive neuroscience, behavioral neuroscience, developmental psychology, cognitive psychology), ethics and teaching workshops
  • Write and defend Major Area Paper (MAP)
  • Write and defend Ph.D. dissertation proposal
  • Conduct Ph.D. research; write and defend Ph.D. thesis
  • Obtain Ph.D. in Psychology (Optional: Certificate in Cognitive Neuroscience)


Interdisciplinary Training Program in Cognitive Neuroscience in the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience


  • Admission to multidisciplinary program: http://www.mind.duke.edu/training/
  • Take required courses: year-long cognitive neuroscience course, ethics and presentation workshops, four elective courses
  • Do three full-time laboratory rotations (including one in CabezaLab)
  • Select P&N as home department, Dr. Cabeza as primary advisor, and a faculty in a different discipline and department as secondary advisor
  • Write and defend Major Area Paper (MAP)
  • Become a full-time member of CabezaLab after finishing rotations, usually at the beginning of Year 2
  • Write and defend Ph.D. dissertation proposal
  • Conduct Ph.D. research; write and defend Ph.D. thesis
  • Obtain Ph.D. in Psychology with a Certificate in Cognitive Neuroscience

Suggested program for Ph.D. at CabezaLab


Year 1

  • Take required courses, including cognitive neuroscience and fMRI courses
  • Read basic literature on cognitive neuroscience of memory and/or aging
  • Hands-on training in general Matlab programming, programming behavioral paradigms using COGENT, analyzing fMRI data using SPM2 and CabezaLab's fMRI toolbox
  • Collaborate in an fMRI study led by a postdoc or senior graduate student
  • Design and conduct 1-3 behavioral studies and submit a paper for publication


Year 2

  • Continue taking required courses and do teaching assistantships
  • Design and conduct one fMRI study and submit a paper for publication
  • Select Ph.D. research domain and review the relevant literature
  • Write and defend the Major Area Paper (MAP)


Years 3-5

  • Write and defend Ph.D. dissertation proposal
  • Conduct Ph.D. research; write and defend Ph.D. thesis
  • Obtain Ph.D. in Psychology (Optional: Certificate in Cognitive Neuroscience)
